Over 70 New Potential Lifesavers Join the DKMS Register!

Apr 29, 2024 | Success Stories

There are moments in a community’s history when the stars align, people come together, and something extraordinary happens. This is one of those sparkling instances that deserves praise and a resounding drumroll!

A Goal Beyond the Field

Through the concerted efforts of individuals united under the common cause of saving lives, Jenny Lewis, Helen Jones and their family and friends achieved something extraordinary at Warrington Rylands FC on April 1, 2024.

In what can only be described as a display of unparalleled generosity, more than 70 people, encompassing passionate home and away fans, dedicated players, committed board members, and vigilant security staff, converged at a donor registration event.

Their purpose? To stand against blood cancer and other life-threatening diseases by registering as potential stem cell donors with DKMS. Everyone who stepped up has become invaluable to a sprawling network of heroes, each ready to give someone a chance at life.

The Power of Community and Collaboration

As part of the esteemed real5 Networking community, Jenny (The Modern World) and Helen (Jones Renovations) recognise the immense potential that stems from unity. Their recent donor registration event surpassed our high expectations, marking it a unique achievement.

Helen’s battle with blood cancer and her subsequent life-saving stem cell transplant from her brother has given this cause a particular resonance for them both. Helen spent agonising weeks waiting to discover if her brother was a match and couldn’t bear to think about what her feelings would have been if he wasn’t.

Motivated by this experience, Jenny and Helen have partnered with real5 Networking & Warrington Rylands FC to ensure as many people as possible sign up for the donor register. They aim to prevent anyone else from experiencing the crushing disappointment of hearing that a donor match cannot be found.

The Impact of Every Swab

Each swab has the potential to be a game-changer. Every new person on the stem cell register represents hope, a chance at life for individuals battling life-threatening conditions like leukaemia and other blood cancers.

It’s easy to underestimate the ripple effect of such actions, but the math is straightforward. Statistically, the odds of being a match for someone in need are small, which means the more people on the register, the better the chance of finding lifesaving matches.

A Heartfelt Thank You

We extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who registered. Your kindness reverberates far beyond the football field, reaching families and individuals holding out for a miracle. To witness the community unite, with people from all walks of life rolling up their sleeves (literally), reinforces our belief in humanity’s boundless capacity for good.
